Early Films of New York, 1898-1906

The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans is a four volume biographical collection of many of the early men and women who built the foundations of America. Within its pages are fascinating details of more than 100 of the early movers and shakers of the United States. This collection makes a great reference work for the works and relationships of these great, early Americans.

The National Wildlife Refuges of Alaska was filmed in 2006 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to show people the beauty of the Alaskan Refuges that are set aside as government protected lands.

The News Media's Coverage of Crime and Victimization (1999) explores how the news media cover crime victims and what can be done to help crime victims cope with the oftentimes insensitive coverage of tragic events. Some example events illustrated in this film include the 1986 murder of Jennifer Levin, the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City and the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. The main focus of the film is to show a better way to handle these tense and emotional situations.

The Story of OSHA was produced in 1980 by the Department of Labor - Occupational Health and Safety Administration. It educates workers about the history of OSHA - how it was set up to help reduce disease and injury in the workplace environment. It also discusses workers rights under the law, how NIOSH conducts various tests to ensure compliance and safety, how standards are set and how OSHA investigates complaints.

The Story of the Hoover Dam explores the construction of this remarkable structure. It starts with the passage of the 1928 Boulder Canyon Project authorizing its construction. It explores the construction of the diversion tunnels, the dam, the support facilities that needed to be created to build it - like a steel fabrication plant that could build the giant sized pipes and the hydroelectric operations that made it a major supplier of electricity for California, Nevada and Arizona. It also explores how Lake Mead became a successful recreational area as the result of the construction of the Hoover Dam.

This documentary follows the amazing creative life of Thomas Alva Edison, one the the worlds great modern inventors - an inventor who's impact was so great that we still use many of the technologies he created 100 years ago. The Street People was produced by the National Institute of Justice in 1986 to discuss police response to runaways, mentally ill and the homeless. The DVD looks at communities in Santa Barbara and Philadelphia and how the police evaluate each situation involving a street person to decide if incarceration or help is the appropriate response. This DVD is focused on awareness of what is and is not a crime by our lowest rung of humanity and offers a look at appropriate alternative responses that in many cases are more beneficial to the homeless and the community than simply locking them in a jail cell.

After the success for their first flights at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the Wright Brothers moved back to Dayton Ohio to continue perfecting their passion. During the period of 1904-1905 on the Huffman Prairie, they developed and perfected the concepts involved in powered flight. As they grew their science, they taught it to others by creating a pilot training school and exhibition company in 1910-1915. This documentary examines this period of their life - documenting their achievements and inventions which helped lay the foundation for modern air flight. Through a mixture of interviews and actual footage from their era, the story of early air flight and these brave pioneers is showcased.

Produced by the Department of Agriculture, United States Forest Service, this video explores the history of the tragic Donner camp of 1846-47 when the Donner party was trapped by the heavy snows of the Sierra Nevada.
