Make a Stop to Usual Cake Decorating Mistakes

Whats the significance of a cake? It brings smiles to many children as they watch you make one. Weddings will not be complete without the wedding cake. So it is important if its not made perfectly. To avoid any baking tragedy, do away with big-time errors as early as now.

1. Whats the most ideal way to prevent frozen cakes from drying?

A smart cake decorator plans well ahead of time all of his cake projects, and that includes saying no to the request of a child for you to bake one for the next day because its his project. Yet who can say no to rush orders, right? Should this be the case, then at least you must be told about it at least twelve hours before the actual event so you can properly plan.

Preplanning cake making may involve identifying how to properly freeze the cakes so that when the deadline is nearing, all you have to do is decorate them.

The only worry about freezing cakes is that they will become dry and tasteless. Yet freezing cakes wont have to dry them out if they are rightfully wrapped and stored. It is best to freeze cakes plain without icing.

For wrapping, you can make use of a plastic wrap which you have to put in two to three layers into the cake. The aluminum foil, on the other hand, comes in handy in order to keep the moisture out of the wrapped cake. Mind you, they can surely last even longer than fruitcakes.

Remove your cake from the freezer a day or two before you are planning to ice and decorate to allow it to completely thaw.

Before you put the icing, defrost the cake to room temperature. Now you may meet a problem in here.

The problem with freezing cakes already iced is that the icing will pick up condensation from the air and sweat during the defrosting time.

In the end, the pattern and decoration will look messy and sloppy, which, of course, nobody likes at all.

So show the world that you are smart to the ways of cakes and make it a habit to bake your cakes in advance!

2. How do I stop my filling from bulging out the sides of my cake into the icing?

This huge difficulty when it comes to cake decoration is now being fought almost every single day. Its the Battle of the Bulge, and upset bakers are desperately crying out for help.

There is the typical question as to how you can avoid filling from bulging into the edges of the cake and then into the icing.

Probably you can start with baking the cake before putting on the filling. You can bake the cake at least a day before so that it will be more settled to hold heavy filling.

These are some techniques on how to prevent fillings from crossing boundaries.

a.) Initially, you can create an icing dam at the edges of the cake. This makeshift barrier will prevent the overflow of filling into the edges.

b.) Cover your entire assembled cake with a crumb coat of a thinned version of your final icing.

c.) Then you keep the cake for two to three hours in a freezer so it will become firmer.

Together, the icing dam and the crumb coat will provide a seal for your cake to hold the filling. Decorate your cake with the final icing, and voila! No more bulge!

3. I have a hard time with crumbs in my icing. What can I do?

The crumb. Such an itty-bitty piece of cake and such a big, huge nuisance when it comes to ice a cake. They are out to damage the intricate cake decoration you have already done.

Its enough to drive a baker to the edge! Fortunately, there are solutions we can take.

For this problem, you can use a crumb coat. It is a fine layer of glaze or icing that you can put on your assembled cake so it will cement any crumbs that are in the layer of the cake. Once the crumb coat has set and dried (a few minutes), you wont have to be concerned about any crumbs sticking to your final icing.

To produce a crumb coat, you mix icing with any liquid that is part of the recipe until they become thin. Apply it in the entire cake.

You wont have any problems about crumbs mixing with the icing or even how the cake will look like. If the crumbs dry up, all of them will then glue to the surface and the cake will have a good layer to contain them together. To speed up everything, you place the cake in the refrigerator. Applying crumb coats may take a while, but its worth it. It greatly decreases the frustration of having crumbs mix into the final icing and does a superb job of firming up the cake base.
