1797 Encyclopedia Britannica Complete 3rd Edition on DVD

The Encyclopedia Britannica Third Edition (1797) is an 18 volume reference work plus two volumes of plates. It was developed during the encyclopedia's earliest period as a two-man operation initiated by Colin Macfarquhar and Andrew Bell, in Edinburgh, Scotland. Most of the editing was done by Macfarquhar, and all the copperplates were created by Bell. The volumes were written over a long period, from volume 1 in 1788 to volume 18 in 1797.

1810 Encyclopedia Britannica Complete 4th Edition on DVD

The Encyclopedia Britannica Fourth Edition (1810) is a 20 volume reference work. It was compiled from 1801 to 1809, and when completed it was bound in 20 volumes of 16,033 pages and 581 plates engraved by Andrew Bell. The editor, James Millar (1762- 1827), an Edinburgh physician and natural scientist, worked mightily to correct the deficiencies and omissions caused in the third edition by the untimely death of Macfarquhar.

1875 Encyclopedia Britannica Complete 9th Edition on DVD

The Encyclopedia Britannica Ninth Edition (1875) is a 24 volume reference work with a 25th volume devoted to an index. It was compiled from 1875 to 1889 and is often references as "The Scholar's Edition" due to its very high quality compared to prior editions. The editor of the ninth edition was T.S. Baynes, professor of logic, metaphysics and English literature at St. Andrews. He was joined by William Robertson Smith, a Semitic scholar, in 1881 and it was Smith who completed the monumental editing job when Baynes died in 1887.

The Encyclopedia Britannica Eleventh Edition (1911) is a 33 volume reference work. Volume 29 is a comprehensive index. Volumes 30-32 are the 1922 supplement to the edition (also referred to as the 12th edition) and volume 33 is a reader's guide to help people better use the set. Work on the main body of the set began in 1903 and was completed in 1911. It was edited by Hugh Chisholm in London and by Franklin Henry Hooper in New York and represents the first edition that was primarily published at one with with all volumes being published in 1910-1911. The 1911 edition was praised for both its scholarship and its writing that was simple enough for non-scholars to enjoy - making it the first true home version of this venerable series.
