World at War

The Big Picture documentary The Atom Soldier is a fascinating look at an atomic attack preparedness drill performed by the U.S. military to ready their troops for potential atomic battlefields. This fascinating test took place at Frenchman's Flat, Nevada in January 1955 at the Army Camp Desert Rock. This test involved thousands of ground troops with the focus being methods to coordinate the men on the ground in the event of a nearby atomic explosion. In addition to being a fascinating glimpse of a very large scale military training exercise, it is also a good educational film about the effects of nuclear explosions on nearby populations.

The Battle of San Pietro was produced by the US Army Pictorial Service in 1945 and was directed by John Huston. This DVD documents the United States efforts to take San Pietro, Italy during World War II. Although commissioned by the US Army to show America how the war was going, they decided not to show it because it too clearly showed the human cost of the war in Europe. This was in stark contrast to the many films released by the Army that showed more sanitized footage of the war efforts.

Produced by the Department of Defense in 1944, The Earthquakers follows the story of the 12th Bomb Group of the 9th Air Force. It explores its role in the air campaign against the Germans in North Africa during Workd War II.

This WWI educational film was created to educate the military on the Japanese people and how they are different than us. It explored the effect of Shintoism and the Samurai code on their psychology and showed/explained several scenes of every day life and training that they received to prepare them for war and the glory of Emperor Hirohito. Narration for this eye opening documentary was performed by Joseph C. Grew.

Produced by the Department of Defense in 1954, this DVD explores the operations of the Army Corps of Engineers and how their talents and drive are used for both missions of peace and war. The Corps was activated during the Revolutionary War and has a proud record of exceptional service that continues to this day. Along with a historical presentation of the Corps, specific projects that were completed during World War II and the early 1950s are highlighted with glimpses of future goals of their organization.
